NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to commission India’s first aircraft carrier “Vikrant” in Kochi on September 2.

According to government officials, the prime minister has been briefed on the carrier’s capabilities.

The Vikrant is the largest warship ever built in India and would be a milestone for the navy and the country, they said.

“Vikrant is a true manifestation of Atmanirbhar Bharat, built with 76% indigenous components,” Southern Navy Commander Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi said of the biggest Make-in-India initiative ever. in the country.

Vikrant is designed by the Indian Navy’s In-house Naval Design Directorate (DND) and built by CSL, a public sector shipyard under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the aircraft carrier is named of its illustrious predecessor, the first Indian aircraft carrier. Vikrant’ who played a vital role in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

“The imminent commissioning of the indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant is indeed historic as it gives us the opportunity as a country to join a select few nations capable of designing and building aircraft carriers. the Navy designed the ship and it was built by Cochin Shipyard Limited here in Kochi. And indeed it is a true manifestation of Atmanirbhar Bharat. About 76% of the cost of the ship in terms of equipment and services is entirely indigenous,” Vice Admiral Hampiholi told ANI.

The 262 meter long transporter has a full displacement of nearly 45,000 tons, which is much larger and more advanced than its predecessor.

Speaking about the specifications of the IAC Vikrant, Vice Admiral Hampiholi said: “Vikrant carries a mix of around 30 aircraft. It could fly the MiG 29k fighter aircraft in anti-aircraft attack, anti- It will be able to operate the Kamov 31 which is an air early warning helicopter, the recently inducted but not yet commissioned MH-60R which is a multi-role helicopter, as well than our very native ALH. She displaces about 45,000 tons, which is certainly the largest warship in the Indian naval inventory.”

With Vikrant, India has joined a select group of nations with the niche capability to design and build an aircraft carrier locally.

IAC Vikrant consists of 14 decks with 2,300 compartments that can carry around 1,500 sea warriors and to meet food requirements, around 10,000 chapatis or rotis are made in the ship’s kitchen, called the ship’s kitchen.

Hampiholi said: “Just to give an idea, the amount of steel that was used in the ship is enough to make maybe four Eiffel Towers. roughly the distance between Kochi and Delhi Each of these MIG 29K aircraft weighs as much as about two African elephants and indeed I should also mention that the vessel possibly generates enough electricity to power a small town and those are the kinds of specs that we’ve tried to hook up usually around about 27-28 knots and like I said most of the equipment on board the ship is native.

Highlighting the possible role of the Vikrant, the Vice Admiral said the carrier can be used to project energy to provide safety and security on the high seas and also provide a credible deterrent with extreme visibility.

“The most important facet of the aircraft carrier is the fact that, like any other warship, it can fulfill a variety of roles given to it. Be it diplomatic, be benign, when I mean benign, I mean say humanitarian aid, disaster relief operations, police as well as military role. The vessel can, like any other warship, be used to project power to ensure safety and security on the high seas and also provide a credible deterrent with extreme visibility I would say an aircraft carrier battle group which is a squad of an aircraft carrier along with an aircraft carrier centered in the background INS Vikrant will provide the Indian Navy with extreme flexibility, sustain and range to accomplish missions in the Indian Ocean region with persistence and presence, that is definitely a big shot in the arm,” he said. he adds.

Hampiholi said that Vikrant will give impetus to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) and added, “It would also give impetus to be the first responder as well as the partner preferred security in our immediate marine area. piece.”

Vikrant was built with a high degree of automation for machine operation, navigation, and ship survivability, and was designed to accommodate an assortment of fixed-wing and rotary aircraft.

Utilizing a new mode of aircraft operation known as STOBAR (short takeoff but arrested landing), the IAC is equipped with a springboard for launching aircraft and a set of “stop wires” for their recovery on board.

The vessel has a large number of indigenous equipment and machinery, involving major industrial houses in the country such as BEL, BHEL, GRSE, Keltron, Kirloskar, Larsen & Toubro, Wartsila India, etc. as well as more than 100 MSMEs. Indigenization efforts have also led to the development of ancillary industries, in addition to creating job opportunities and enhancing the return effect on the economy, both locally and across India. .
